Along the Richardson Highway 2

aepelbacher

Used a monopod. Adjusted and cropped in Photoshop cs. Approximately 3:00 p.m. Yes, I know that 800 speed film is not optimal for landscape photography. I am working on composition and am also working within a budget. I used 400 and 800 speed film for this entire trip in Alaska merely for the flexibility ... I wanted to be able to shoot a couple of pics of a mountain then of a bear then of a building in changing weather conditions (often overcast) and with different length lenses without having to change out film. Thanks for the comments on film ... next time I go to Alaska (!!) I will take some 100 ISA with me!

Lou Ann, The scenery in this part of the world is so overwhelming that the temptation to photograph everything 'around the next bend' is ever present. I guess one has to make the best of the time and opportunity available but I can't help thinking most of these mid day shots you've presented would be best left untaken if there was a chance you could get back early\late in the day for the more flattering low angle light. The flat, mid day lighting does not enhance this scene but the composition is good for being 'on the fly'. The inclusion of some prominent foreground element would have provided more depth to the scene. You have the middle & background nicely covered. The clouds thankfully break up an otherwise pretty but boring sky. Essential for the travel album perhaps but not as impressive in print as it was to the naked eye I'll bet. Best, LM.

Len - I agree with everything you said. I'm working on composition here. You're right ... I certainly did photograph just about everything around every bend. I was on the road, getting from place to place, most days for many hours. Didn't do any camping, and the only other places to stay are in the towns (not near places like this). I also need to learn how to camp. :-) Thanks for your honest assessment!!

Lou,I really like this one. The colors are great. Once again I have to say, "Thanks for showing us Alaska." I want to see whats around every bend.

Your scenics are beautiful...and sometimes you just take the photo, not because of the perfect light, or film, or photo rule, but because you are there and it is your memory! Not many photos are perfect! Nice work.

Hi Lou Ann! The photograph is fine, but if it were mine I would allow a little more sky above the clouds. I would also boost the saturation a little. I posted a version to better show you what I mean. Regards.
