tad doxsee 0 Posted April 21, 2004 For some reason, this one really grabs my eye. I like the diagonal lines, formed by the tracks, intersecting the red line of cars. Link to comment
tholte 16,678 Posted April 21, 2004 I like the colors and texture and how you filled up the frame. The little slice of darkness at the top right balanced the image to perfection. Link to comment
ajpn 0 Posted April 21, 2004 Really like it, although I may have cropped a little more of the foreground [those three white boxes]. No way to get the rear of that seventh train? Link to comment
dberryhill 3 Posted April 21, 2004 Ken, this is a really appealing composition, with the diagonals and the repeating pattern of the trains. I also like the touch of red that the trains add. Fine work! Link to comment
root 0 Posted April 21, 2004 The bright red, even spacing, and oblique lines make for a great composition. The eye tends to find elements that are not part of the repeating patterns, ie the black triangle, yellow stick, black post, and three white boxes. If I had seen this, I would have hoped to get the cleanest shot possible to direct all attention on the tracks, red cars, and the roof pattern. Link to comment
root 0 Posted April 22, 2004 You noticed, I hope, that I took the liberty of cloning out a few things. Getting these shots clean in camera can be quite challenging. If you have ready access to this one, I'd go back when the light is better and use a longer lens. The strong subject would be worth the effort, I think. Link to comment
tholte 16,678 Posted April 22, 2004 I just changed my rating to a 5/5 with this new crop job. Link to comment
root 0 Posted April 22, 2004 Please change it back. If you rated higher, it's my change, not his, and besides it's just a down and dirty clone job to help visualize a slightly different approach for the next visit. It's not presented as a finished image. If you rated it down, then that could have a damping effect an future critiques, since not everyone will be as relaxed as Ken about the effects of 'improvements'. . . . end of diatribe. ken_thalheimer 3,739 Posted April 22, 2004 Wish I would have thought of your crop and clone before the upload. I do like it better. To that end it's easy to be relaxed about it. Unfortunately this can't be re-taken. These were retired soon after and the entire fleet sunk and used as artificial reefs in different parts of the Atlantic coast. There is another version which I may post in the near future. Thanks for your very constructive input- Ken Link to comment
savoca 0 Posted April 22, 2004 Excellent composition and with Carl's Clone Job it's even better. Inspiring picture ! Link to comment
tholte 16,678 Posted April 22, 2004 I was kidding about lowering the rating but I was serious about liking the original better than the cropped image. The dark triangle counter-balances the rr tracks, you don't have to be riding the caboose to realize that. Link to comment
wilsontsoi 0 Posted April 23, 2004 ...nevertheless, this is one of my favorite of your images. I still like it as much today as when I first saw it. Link to comment

jnicholson 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Hi Ken, I just came across this picture looking through your magnificent portfolio and I wanted to add my accolades to the already impressive list. What I find most appealing about this shot is that if you look at it a while the trains start to look like toys. That line between reality and fantasy gets blurred. Thanks. Link to comment
sondra kick 0 Posted May 16, 2005 Nice composition, Ken, and great lines. Cheers, Sondra Link to comment
christian.s.mendes 0 Posted June 25, 2005 Very interesting work. Good composition, I like the mix between the diagonals of the lines and the trains. Good work. Link to comment
joachim.wabnig 0 Posted August 1, 2005 I like how the monochrome of the tracks and the roofs is broken by the red of the cars. This division is repeated in the pattern diagonal/horizontal/diagonal. Great composition. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 19, 2006 Really eye-catching, even as a thumbnail. Every element of this works. The patterns are tremendous, but what really gives the image its life is the band of red interrupting the near-monochrome. The original transparency must be terrific. Link to comment
