Blimey. Who said mono is running scared in this digital age? Great picture.

Nice texture, especially in the foreground rocks. The only thing that might be improved here is the composition--the main rock in the foreground lines up too closely with the big formation in the background. Really not much to quibble about, though. Nice shot.

Real nice John, I can just about feel the texture in those boulders. Taken just at the right moment too judging from the light on the main round boulder and cloud cover. I like your framing at the bottom with those four rocks too but admit my first reaction was a little like Gary's in wanting to see more space between the round boulder in the front and the main structure breaking the horizon. A more diagonal layout of that 'line' by moving the camera a bit higher and to the left could obviously do just that (you probably tried it), but I guess the bottom half of the shot would then have been weaker than what you have here. I find it interesting too that had there had been another rock along the lower right edge forming a more symmetric/complete 'cradle' the somewhat compressed nature of the central area might not have been an issue for me.

Gary and Richard, I feel the same way about the composition. This was the only vantage point possible really, tripod 1m to the left = wet camera! In the end I decided I liked it enough to expose some film. The light was variable, and this was the best. I took a colour frame about 10 minutes later and the light was quite flat. I've just uploaded the colour version.

John nice image I like the composition and I can visualise a lovely rich looking print. The scanning to me looks like it could use a little more contrast and some darkening around the mid tones. I have to say though that it is not possible to do and an image such as this justice on the web but it does give one a taste. Did you try the Ilford warm tone yet.

No I haven't yet! I really should order some in from Melbourne. It's such a hassle getting darkroom materials here, I usually leave it for my occasional interstate trips. Thanks for your thoughts, I'm looking forward to printing this one. Cheers,

John, I had a hunch that moving to the left was not an option. I should have mentioned that in my first comment. It's still a very compelling image. Well done.

At first thought was a bit busy but I like it... soft contrast and infinite nuances of grey works well.

did you try a square version cropping the lower side stones... emphasizes the round stone better as the main subject and reduces the apparent busy-ness IMO

That's impressive thinking Jacques. I like it! Ive spent an evening with this one in the darkroom already and made a nice print of it. I'll go back and try again with your thoughts in mind. Thank you.

Sometimes when checking out and rating others I take a peek at what they think is the best and stumbled upon your work which I believe is excellent! Of course I am a color person myself but there just some times when B&W is the best.

I would like to see the colored version of this.

Once again, Excellent work.
