Madison Avenue, NYC

The number 1 was polished brass, and with the sun reflecting off it, was like 9 stops above everything else. So I said screw it, I'll expose for that and let everything else go to shadowland.

Another excellent shot. And what I like is that you have a clear sensibility of your own, so that every new shot becomes a way of inflecting and developing that sensibility, which is the mark of a very good photographer. Indeed, that's the difference between being a good photographer and being someone who occasionally produces good photos. Coherence.

Tirta, my camera has a primitive metering system that's somewhere between center-weighted and spot. In mixed light conditions I'll wave it around to determine what the range is and then pick an exposure based on what I'm after. Here there was a huge range, even too much for tri-x (that "1" was so bright you couldn't even look at it), so it was either dead-black shadows or a big white hole in the center of the frame. I think this was like 1/1000 at f/11 or something.

Good choice.

I always enjoy your work, you've got a great eye for the down low stuff...
