Patriot -- Canada Day Pow Wow 2002

A photo I'd not have been able to take without Canon's IS lens system & one I'd not be able to reproduce without Photoshop.

Although this is a local Vancouver area Chief I'm sure that he respects & believes in what the the American flag he's standing in front of stands for.

[Z -- Thanks I *really* appreciate you taking the time to comment.

And then thanks times two for going one step further and providing your preferred methodology!!

I can see myself (sorry, pun intended though) redoing previous photo's eyes as soon as I get back home to my Photoshop machine.

And to close...one useful comment like yours has more value to me then all the 7's on the site!

Jim - I'm sure that you appreciate Bailey's comment, and can certainly understand that it would mean more to you than a bunch of 7's. But please keep in mind that some are like me ... I give you 7's without much comment because your work is amazing in my eyes, yet as a complete novice, I don't feel that I have anything to say about your work that would be significant (beyond, "Wow!" or, "This is wonderful!" etc.) or that you don't already know. This image, as most of your other images of Native Americans, leaves me with the feeling of having truly interacted with the subject. Many of your images are etched into my memory, and I return to this portfolio often. Please accept my ratings (often without comment) as gratitude for what you've shared.

Not sure thatI can make a technical comment but I can easily imagine this excellent picture as the front page a historical book. I like the position of the respectable man in the space and the background is enoughly distracting to convey the image of the spirit and the strength of a nation in the upperbackground. Clever and expressive Jim.

I actually think I'm much more partial to the original B&W despite the excess elements near the flag. In the shot you displayed, the flag seems to be given to much prominence; and I'm not sure exactly what the subject is supposed to be. The headress, expression and clothing are a wonderful shot in and of itself; and I think I would much prefer this as a portrait style with a pure black background; or maybe a background that isn't so prominent. Your capture of him, as a person, however is amazing.

The original upload certainly caught my eye, and I love it. The original b&w is also fantastic and conveys a completely different feeling to me I like it as well as the PS photo.

Hi Jim, I do have a comment about your post-production in photoshop CS. I do feel that you might have sharpened your subject a bit much. Recently, I have been using layers to blend my sharpened image - rather than sharpening directly unto the image.

Ringo...really appreciate hearing from you BUT you better be careful as your suggestion sounds so good that I'll have to invite you over to my place to show me how to do layers -- I've never done them!

And to close I must say that it's great to be getting all this feedback -- it's got me pumped righted up!

Hi Jim. There are a couple things you might want to consider with this image. Although you might be new to Photoshop, having never done layers, there are a couple of simple things you might try. Image, Adjust, Autolevels is simple and instant. Then as contrast is lacking in the midtones, go to Image, Adjust, Highlights/Shadows and tweek the Midtone Contrast (if you have PS CS). To lighten the eyes choose the Stitch Tool. Outline the whites of one eye. HOLD the shift key down and do the other white sections. Feather 1 pixel. Lighten about 15-20%. Deselect. It's a fine picture, it just needs a little "darkroom" work. e-mail me if this is confusing.
