Composition is okay, although it seems to be mostly centered composition. The focus is wonderful, the tones don't really have a wide range on them, the overall appeal is good because of the place you are in and the way you chose to show how huge it really was. Suggestions would be to have the child prop up in the corner of the tree with a book and one leg over the other reading, or something of the sort instead of just standing there. This is a great backprop for all kinds of poses and all kinds of shots. Watch out for all the grey though, you might want to shoot in color.

Yes--sense of scale well captured. It seems that the little one will be beamed upward in an instant--and no I don't watch Star Trek ;o\

This giant tree will be woodchipped and end up as the wrappers of countless Big Macs unless we can stop the greed of the forest industry. They have never conserved their resource sufficiently, never replanted enough in the past, and now we must all pay the price of their wasteful practices, with destruction of beautiful wild places like this. I'm not happy about it.

I'm going to this place on Sunday. Better enjoy it while it is still there...

Once this coupe is clearfelled, 90% will end up as woodchips and only 10% as saw logs. It is enough to make you sick.

About the sense of scale, John. I wonder if The Blue Tier Giant would look even larger if it "dwarfed" an adult standing there... In other words, could it be that some of the scale goes lost because we are looking at a boy. Maybe an awkward way of verbalizing this, but I hope you know what I mean.

Sunday, 14 March

Today was our turn to visit the Blue Tier Giant. Unfortunately, the weather was clear and sunny. I'm sure you will agree, that going into a forest on a sunny day can make it rather difficult to take nice photos. The bright sunny spots form a dappled tapestry with the dark understorey. Getting a satisfactory frontal shot was not possible, so I went around to the shady side of the giant and came up with my interpretation.

A shame we didn't have identical shots to compare the scale... Did you take any photos with an adult in front of the tree?

OK, it looks like the PN servers have moderated our follow-up on this one John. Don't worry about re-loading the other scans, I've seen them and saved at least one on my hard drive for future reference (pending an unsuccessful injunction by the Break O' Day council). The latter just being a fancy way of saying that this tree will then indeed be history.

They're all gone! Not to worry.

I just got back from the "pro-forestry" rally down town. Got my plackard stolen and smashed up, but it lasted a while and I made my stance. ;-) Look for me on the telly tonight, I might be on.

Got home after 7pm and caught the last bit of a report on ABC news. I only saw the usual self-serving pollies on screen...

Can't say too much about that because they might shoot me (I'm a messenger and have to work with both sides of the parliament). ;-)

Yeah, several of my best customers are important forestry industry businesses, so I have to be careful too. The thing is people like us are not "against" the forest industry, just against the destruction of the last unprotected areas of high conservation value, undisturbed old-growth and fringe wilderness areas. In today's paper there's mention of one green individual on Tamar Bridge having his sign stolen and smashed up. Most of the marchers were civilised and peaceful, but those guys were just thugs. I walked away. I saw on the news that it was the same thugs that roughed up 69 year-old grandmother Fairlie Fergusson and tried to destroy her banner.

Excelent portrait... really a keeper. And a beautifull setting, that's what makes this so nice... portraits are portraits... but this one, where the beauty of nature is combined with a portrait... great! Did I get this right? Are they going to make paper of this tree?

Yes, that's their plan Julien. They are clear felling just across the valley from here right now, and are on their way.

If you try to protest, you get arrested, jailed or fined.

That sounds horriffic... it's such a shame... people can be so disrespectfull towards nature... if nature could speak... and as long as nature can't speak for itself... next year I'm doing an Msc in enironmental and resource management... so maybe I can speak in the future.
