Does toning this detract from it's monochromactic impact by making

it appear too close the color that you would expect this object to

be? (Sorry for the repeated CR - I deleted the last one by mistake

trying to edit it.)

this is a super tom, its my favourite kind of shot and i do like the toning, i think it works well here. my preference would be for more sharpness in the foreground tho', i tried to fake it in ps to see what was like and will post result - the softer version you have here works too and am sure many will prefer it as is.

Nice one Tom. But I would go for something less symmetric. Crop left or right perhaps?

Apart from that the duotone works on this one for me. Good DOF too! Nice shot of a simple object. Me like that!

Cheers,

Tom

I like it very much, subjecto, duo tone etc. I think though that sharpness is an issue here, personally I like very sharp photos and i think that it would be stronger if you could see textures clearly, but that is me. Great photo anyhow

Nice image. Unlike TT I love the symmetrical nature of this shot. I will admit I am a sucker for symmetry. The one thing that has to be watched though is your perspective when shooting. The verticle line is straight but the horizonatal lines are funning uphill. This creates a real off balance feel to the shot. Either use symmetry or don't. Not sure if there is a middle ground.

Also (like Liv) I crave more sharpness to really display the texture of the chain.

A really fine image... Dave

Thanks for the comments. I really thought too that this is a subject best shot straight on. Too bad I don't have it perfectly symetrical. I lined up the chain (since that was my focus), but should have lined up the grate. Do you think a top down crop would aleviate the soft foreground issue without comprimising the composition?

i actually made a slight alteration to the symmetry of this in the sharpened upload - if you re pref is for symmetry it is fixable if you are prepared to give up the purist concept of "no photoshoping"

the chain base is still slightly off but i think that gives it a smidgin of character, the horizontal back bar and alteration to the rhs link chain fade out at top give the symmetry i think this needs (agree with dave on this - no crop). would love to see a repost of the original as this one is suffering from pn compression too i suspect. this is definately wall hanging stuff for me - super - but think i said that already ;)

Well regarding Photoshopping, this is one that I'd like to be able to print in my darkroom (so far it's just a negative scan). Some of the suggestions I can accomplish, some I can't. I'll bear in mind the ones that I can when I go to print. Thanks again.

I like it a lot - something ordinary shown in an unusual way. I like the tones too - no problem there. The clever idea IMO is to have flipped it over, simple but works very well. I have a slight preference for the sharper version, but only having seen it (ie the original doesn't appear undersharp). The lack of symetry due to the thicker bar on the right is a bit unsettling, but the more I look at it the more it seems right - just that small something to disturb the viewer. Nice work Thomas.
