I like his features and managed to take this shot. He was very

reluctant to be photographed and had to be cajoled!

The boards are distracting

I actually wanted the boards in to show up his weathered features due to his livelihood working in the beach.

The flash creates shiny spots on the skin. Without that, it would be a nice picture

Without a fill-in flash his face would have been too dark due to the backlight from the sun and sandy beach.

I think it's an interesting portrait...the flash reflex give hima strange appearance, not intended in a negative way...he seems like plastic! the surfboard are important, as Alec said.

I like the face and the board they tell his story!
