The answer to your question about the "funnel" is simple... LUCK. I usually shoot around 150 exposures during the burn time of a cigarette. From these I can get from zero to maybe 10 with interesting patterns worth printing.

 

The ability to shoot MANY exposures is a huge advantage of digital photography. Although I shoot film, mostly medium-format, the cost would be prohibitive for this sort of shooting, atleast for me.

 

Photographing smoke is like looking at clouds and trying to see figures and forms. Every now-and-then a shape just "pops out" of the image.
