"Brave Ulysses"

jimmcnitt

A head and character study for a portrait of Homer's Odysseus. This composite incorporates textures taken with the D-60 and 540EZ Speedlite in the American Museum of Natural History (NYC). These include a longitudinal view of a dinosaur illustration.

Photographic texture sources include dinosaur bones, pocked meteorite craters on the surface of a bronze model of the moon, and the random fissures and scratches found on the surface a mineral specimen. "Brave Ulysses" is a CG wireframe model with photographic textures rendered in Poser.

I see that I'm not the only one with the "ski" lastname here who admires your work.

This one speaks to me. At first I thought it was overloaded but after giving it more time there is only one thing I'm not comfortable with. His shoulder. It seems a bit too pronounced too important. But it might be your intention. I'll have to come back. Regards,

Good to see you back Jim. .... and your "come-back" composition is very fine, original and with nice warm colors. A very fine work.

the composite is reasonably aesthetic, but the connection of the elements presented, and the image of the mythological character of the saga, is on the whole a non sequitor. saying it is so doesn't make it so.

The textures work well with this image. The expression on the face is very compelling. I'm wondering if it might be an even stronger shot with just the head and neck, with that background. I do like it, as is, though.

Very happy to see you again Jim. 'Brave Ulysses' is another great creation from you and show lot of creativity and a great personal style. The expression of this photo is remarquable. I like the suggestion of Kim to crop a little beat at the bottom.

Bravo for your excellent artistic work.

Nice to see you back Jim. You came back in style:-))))

I'm less on PN, because from here in Belgium it's slow, so very slow... nearly impossible to surf on PN.

Friendly regards, Ben

Jim, I've never found Cleveland Browns colors too appealing, but you've made them so here. Your compositions are fantastic, and your talent in putting photo-textures together quite awe-inspiring. This photo, though different in subject from many others in your portfolio, still bears your signature, and is a remarkable achievement! Great work!

Hi Jim, glad to have you back. You appear to be just as talented as ever.

What I really like about this image is the way you left the eye unmanipulated making him appear to have a vulnerable interior, while the use of the textures on the rest of his face and body, make him appear to have a stoic exterior.

your composites are becoming better every time I see them--watch out, you might stumble upon one of your digital compositions in those museums you're always frequenting! ;o)

as for my critique of this photo, the textures definitiely add ancient feel to the work, but I think you need something--some symbol, maybe a small scene worked into the background--that represents Ulysse.

beautiful work, Jim.

Your presence and encouraging comments were missed and are quite welcomed Mr. Jim! I like the face of Brave Ulysses here...particularly his eye. I wonder how a less busy background would work with this one as well. As always, very good work. Aloha!
