My Son Investigates the Horrors of War

robertbrown

20 sec exposure, had my my son move out of the scene after about 10 seconds. This was shot at an old battery overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River.

Comments ratings appreciated on semi-experimental shot--does this

express any feeling? I like the design ok, but would happy to hear

suggestions.

Without the explanation, the red color is undefinable. Actually, I'm still not certain what I am looking at, but I assume it is a red coat and hood (?)

looks like little red riding hood. if the room represents the horrors- wouldnt it be red and the person not? meaning the room would stand out more than the figure. I could be reading this completely upside down and inside out.

addendum. after viewing a bit longer I really think the figure needs more detail/outline. its certainly ghostly but...

Knicki and Thomas, thanks for your comments. I think the title is more than a tad bit melodramatic and the symbolism may be more subtle than metaphoric. The photo is more about tone--the red figure (representing life, blood, violence, war) entering into the forbidding unknown. After wandering around the abandoned battery, my son, his friend and I had a relatively meaningful discussion about why the battery was built, and then about the war. Perhaps this experience has made the my interpretation of this rather hermetic.

Again, thanks for your comments--they're always appreciated.

well, now that you explain it a bit better. I was seeing the red figure as your son and the room representing war and such. next time you should take us all on the field trip.

Knicki, who's driving the bus? Will you bring the treats? This could be a good space for our shoot, though you'd better wear your galoshes!
