Reading the Bible.

curra

Every Lalibela church has a monk to take care of it. He uses to be reading the Bible or holding the golden and holy cross .

This portrait works much better without the feet. It concentrates on his reading and personality. One of your bests! IMHO. (A slim frame would make this photo stand much more...)

No llegué a ver la versión que comentan, pero esta me gusta mucho, especialmente la luz. Saludos.

I agree with you, Marina, the use of artificial lighting would surely disturb your subject's concentration. You captured your image and left "life" as it was, without disrupting life's flow. Also, artificial lighting has a tendency to cast annoying shadows behind the subject. Good choice on your part. Great image. You're better than you give yourself credit for!

A tripod is oftentimes cumbersome to carry around and awkward to set up without disturbing one's subject; have you considered a monopod? In low light, you may find that it helps avoid camera shake, due to slow shutter speeds (this image has no such blur!). Just a thought from a humble fan.

I feel very honoured when you donwload one of my photos, work on it taking your time , just to teach me .......MUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK.

About the crop , I like it as is, because i love the shawl´s textures in the shadow...don´t you?

Marina, you are teaching me! Many of your pictures are brilliant. Downloading other peoples photos and playing with them in photoshop is also a great way of teaching yourself how to set up photos. It's the light that makes this shot, great light.

If u had not escaped to digital and used a high contrast film, fuji slide or agfa ultra 100 neg, the shadows would have been much darker and the photo become extra-ordinary. Composition is strict, simple and clear..

Thomas, Digital has less lattitude generally then even slide film. Also it's just a matter adjusting the shadows in levels if you want to drop the darker areas. I think the exposure and contrast are just fine as they are.

Hello Marina, Good pic, nice light, great atmosphere. I only wish it was a bit sharper. It's not easy to take snapshots with low light but in this case I think you had the time to find something (chair, table,...) to make the stability of your camera a bit better. I think this man was taking all the time to read and was not planning to leave within 5 seconds. Best Geert

I love all your African pictures, but this one is really nice.

I would have left a little more headroom, but cropping is very subjective anyway !

i agree with Curra's love for the shadows and textures of the shawl. Beautiful crop!

And, again, can understand that insistence on Gareth about asking or not asking but I don't agree on the importance of it. But of course I'm not a US subject traumatised by lack of security, litigation threats and all those so called individual liberties...
