colin carron 58,916 Posted January 20, 2004 It pains me to put this in as 'Architecture' but there is no 'Engineering' category. It was taken with a little plastic 110 camera many years ago while I was working on a bridge project in Scotland. It works better cropped with just the unfinished gap and the section being lifted but it won't blow up that far. All comments welcome! Link to comment
ber 0 Posted January 21, 2004 Hi Colin,I always love pictures of big engineering projects !This is maybe due to the fact that I work in tunnel building for many years.I understand well you pain with the 'Architecture' category ! ;-) However let's go back to the shot; I like the composition, I have no problem with the 2 parts of the bridge. The only 'complain' is the quality of the print.Kind regards,Marc Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted January 21, 2004 Thanks Marc! It is good to know you looked at the picture with understanding. Glad you appreciated it despite the poor quality. Link to comment
philmorris 0 Posted January 21, 2004 Its decent. And the interesting part is positioned over white sky so it can be seen with clarity. Had it been somewhere over the trees it would have been an eye strain. Plus theres the river bank, cottage and upright to anchor the composition. Although of comparative poor quality this 20something itsy bitsy bit of neg aint as bad as I would have thought it would be. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted January 21, 2004 Thanks Phil. I thought it was worth sharing and at the same time see if my photgraphy has improved over time. I'm happy to say this gets lower ratings than most of my more recent efforts. Link to comment
atkphotoworks 0 Posted January 21, 2004 Sometimes the photos just don't fit nicely into certain boxes, and "Other" or Uncategorized" just doesn't seem to cut it either. Link to comment
alberto.conde 0 Posted January 23, 2004 ...and loved the shot entirely since it brought back memories of years ago when I was involved in some heavy bridge building in the Kuwaity desert. I'm sure the phisycs of the concrete pouring were totally different!Pity the poor quality and regarding the crop I don't mind having all that info in order to understand the dimensions Link to comment
tripanfal 3 Posted January 23, 2004 Call me crazy, but I like the rough, grainy look to this photo. It is actually the main reason I chose to view full size and see what it was all about. I think it works well here. I agree with the framing, all the action is in the sky which makes for very nice viewing. Link to comment
mike l 0 Posted January 23, 2004 I rather like the way the people on the bridge give a tremendous sense of proportion. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted January 23, 2004 Alberto - it is actually a steel box girder with a lightweight concrete road deck. I was involved with pouring the concrete deck. Probably a little cooler than Kuwait I guess! Christopher thanks! I know what you mean about the grain but I would really like to have had a decent camera then. Michael - I wonder what McGonagall would have made of the Beautiful motorway bridge on the Silvery Tay. And standing where those guys are took a little getting used to! Link to comment

andris 0 Posted January 28, 2004 Great moment, like it! But I'll rate this higher if you remove the dust. :-))) Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted January 29, 2004 Thanks mike. It would have made a big splash. Andris thanks and I hope this new, less spotty version is more to your liking. Link to comment
nicholasprice 0 Posted February 28, 2005 An exceedingly dramatic photograph Colin. It sort of says something about man conquering nature. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted October 11, 2005 I notice a recurring theme regarding bridges, tell me Colin how do you move from design work to shift work? Feel free to e-mail if it's a little too much info for broadcast. PS love the image. Link to comment
