chris_venhaus 49 Posted January 15, 2004 I'd like your impressions of this image I took in the Death Valley area last week. The moon was really there (No PS). Also the foreground is a mud Playa, not water.... Link to comment
l. v. 0 Posted January 15, 2004 Fantastic play of light and shadow. I wonder, how you did this. Very good job! Link to comment
brad_hiltbrand 0 Posted January 15, 2004 I was at the racetrack dawn to dusk on the 4th of January and kept trying to figure out how to best photograph the grandstand rocks against the playa. I failed miserably. Your image is simply wonderful. I am sure the moon was really there, it was rising after dusk earlier in the week, so this image makes sense. I do think a little PS touch-ups to tone down the sky and enhance the appearence of the moon would help this shot a great deal. Nice job. A "wish I had taken that" shot. Congratulations. slide 0 Posted January 16, 2004 Great composition. One of my favorite places, I like that it's not your typical racetrack shot. The contrast between the grandstand and mountains really works. Link to comment
bjcarlton 0 Posted January 17, 2004 Awesome image; the blue of the playa and the shadow on the mid-ground rocks are incredible. However, I've got to question the technical information provided: this scene is in Wisconsin? And you used film in a Canon 10D? And if all that's true (especially the part about Wisconsin), this isn't manipulated? Link to comment
tom grubbe 0 Posted January 17, 2004 Very creative shot Chris. I was there a couple years ago and never would have thought of a silhoette. Getting the moon in the shot was either very lucky or excellent planning. I do agree about the sky but there's not much you can do with a polarizer at this angle, maybe a 1-stop grad. Still this is a terrific, creative shot of an awesome place. Link to comment
chris_venhaus 49 Posted January 17, 2004 I hadn't updated my film choices in my profile to include CF media, and overlooked the default location of WI. I stated in my description the location was Death Valley. Link to comment
david_smith35 0 Posted January 17, 2004 This is a most unusual treatment of 'The Grandstand' - I wonder what this image would have looked like with a touch less exposure. The distant hills are just beginning to lose detail in the highlights. Link to comment
bob_picard1 0 Posted March 13, 2004 I really love the composition and the feel this has. I must admit I am somewhat confused, if you can enlighten me please. Was the exposure taken on January 7th 2004? If that is correct, with moonrise at approximately 4:57 p.m. and sunset at approximately 4:53 p.m.on the 7th, how did you pull this off? Link to comment
miles_hecker 0 Posted October 23, 2005 A very nice composition here Chris. If it wheremine I think I'd darken the sky and water for more drama. Well done.. Link to comment
lonebearimages 0 Posted June 17, 2008 I really like the layering in here. The silhouetting of the Grandstand is terrific. Wonderful balance between the bluish tones of the playa and the sky. Nice work! Cheers! Chris Link to comment
jeremy jackson 0 Posted January 7, 2010 Amongst the best landscape images I have ever seen. Did you try a darker sky and warmer on the mountain? Just wondering what it would look like. Chris, I'm so glad to have found your work tonight. I'm really impressed. Cheers, JJ Link to comment
