It was a cold day in Philadelphia when I came upon this couple in

downtown Rittenhouse Square. I have no idea why the woman took off

her shoes! Your critiques will be appreciated. Thanks.

Clearly a unique scene. When was this taken? Part of me thinks that this is a contemporary image, but something about it makes me think it is from the past.

Your instincts are correct, Andrew--the photo was taken more than 30 years ago. Thanks for your kind remarks.

And for yours, too, Daniel. A mention of Bresson in a critique of my work is much more than I deserve.

Definitely a good shot (Bresson!). Daniel, what bothers you, maybe is the same as for me: the space below the feet (I mean the bottom of the picture) is much bigger than above their heads, making it a little bit desequilibrated? what do you think?

A smashing picture. How easy it might have been in the couple of seconds available, to concentrate on the occasion at the expense of the location. Framing so as to include the shoes at the foot of the picture was inspirational. For that reason I do not believe the picture is out of balance. Indeed the picture might have a little more room at the lower margin. On the downside the concrete of the bench appears to blend in / blow out with the concrete of the paving along the left edge of the frame. But thats secondary.

A perfect street image, Bill. The choice of the moment is great and so is the idea to include the shoes of the woman. It's strange to see the heavy clothes of the two and the bare feet of the woman. I have the impression of a beautiful moment of intense passion.

One of my favorites of yours, Bill; and one of my favorites in general.

Why did she take of her shoes? I think she did not want to dirty the bench. But why bare feet on a cold day?
