Moonrise over Hawaii

vincetylor

Taken in September 2003. I used a tripod and cable release. Moonrise shooting has never been easy for me. Just being out there though is where the fun is! Your comments and opinions are always appreciated. www.hawaiianphotos.net

Very nice composition. I would like more detail in the moon, but I know how hard that is to do. The lighting is very pleasing and it contrasts nicely with the rocky foreground.

great colors, good composition,. I like the rocks in the fore ground. Much better than the usual double exposure with oversized moons.

What's this? Natural-looking colours from the Saturation King? I'm pleasantly surprised, Vince. I usually feel shouted at or punched between the eyes with your images, but this one actually makes me feel peaceful. In its own simple, undemanding way this is rather beautiful. Keep this up and you'll make me redundant.

Another good one. Nice use of color tones and composition. Excellent! Will be most honored if you have time to visit my site.

Trevor, Next thing you know Vincent will be suggesting full desaturation to produce B&W images! :) Nice composition Vincent, though I would prefer a tad less dark foreground & a corresponding increase in the beautiful sky area. Best, LM.

I can see a very clear white line along the horizon. Is this the result of your ND grad or manipulation in photoshop. The color of the foreground looks unnatual to me. Good composition though.

Serene, delicate and, yet, warm, colours.

An excellent piece of artistic landscaping, Vincent. My best wishes for your talent to continue next year!

Speechless?! You!? not hardly.

Don't shoot me, but I had exactly the same reaction that Trevor did, and I also agree with Jim's comment about the typical oversized moon. The lack of detail tells me it's genuine because you have to focus on infinity OR have a sharp foreground, not both. The fact that's it's not blown out tells me your exposure was dead on. Oh, and I like the horizon line in the middle.

Carl, are you and Trevor the same person??

Thanks for the compliments. Yes, the larger the moon is (or more I zoom in) the more difficult time I have with depth. The moon is very real here, and in the original there is a great deal of detail in there as well. I too thought twice avbout the centered horizon, but also agree that it works fine...mostly because of the moon I reckon. Thanks again. Aloha to all!

Hi Vince, just saw this today... I too like this considerably more than most of your colour-filtered shots; even if this is with a filter, it's quite believable. I agree with you the moon plays a key part too; not only is its exposure spot on, it's colour and position punctuate the image perfectly.

Vincent I love your portfolio and indeed this picture. The colours are exciting and the contrast punchy. I am also impacted by the fact that you are still a big silver halide fan. As such I just want to ask do you rate Velvia at its designated 50 or at 40 when you shoot? Anyway keep the great pics coming. BH.

Ben, I have always rated Velvia as it was originally intended at 50. Once you lose highlights, it's very difficult to save the image. Where on the otherhand, I find if my images are a bit on the darker side, they actually look better at times and can easily be adjusted. I always make a point of bracketing by .1/3 each way...just in case! Hope this helps. Aloha for stopping by and the nice compliments.
