Willow & Rock

LenMarriott

f16, auto exposure, tripod, cable release. Decided to post this one after initially rejecting it for excessive contrast (rocks) & blur from the wind in the willows (please forgive, couldn't resist that one) Taken on a recent short field trip with fellow PNetter Bill (WJ) Gibson the scene is typical of the area for mid November. Looking for comments on quality, technique, film, or whatever effect this has on you. Best, LM.

Oh God, you're hangin' out with William J ............. (-;

The blur in the 'wind in the willows' doesn't bother me. What does is having to use the word 'painterly'. Which is the look I see and like. I like a lot of contrast so that's not an issue with me either. Only the small plants - branches in the right foreground distract me for some reason. Composition looks good too - the path of the darker rock line across the frame and the patches of color in both upper corners look well placed.

Ken, this rock is, in reality, an island but even if I could have reached it I wouldn't have disturbed the vegetation on it. I have no problem with removing\rearranging a fallen leaf or two or temporarily bending\tying back a branch that interferes with my composition etc. but even though I'm not an aggressive nature nut I try to leave a scene the way I found it. Sometimes you just have to take your lumps (or aggressively apply PS:) A beer can is another story. Thanks for reenforcing the feeling I had when I first framed this shot. W.J.? We just happen to live within 1/2 hrs drive of each other. This spot is one of his haunts. Best, LM.

Now Len, I just said it distracted me - not to call in an air strike - smiling out loud. Although, munitions have improved dramatically over the years and you might consider it as option 3 for the next beer can you run across ......... (-;

Ken, Len is a good egg, I am more the scrambled kind. He was very brave this day, it was cold as hell and that evening it snowed. It is a much nicer spot in the summer and with more foliage and less of a roaring torrent of water. We will have to show you that next year.

Your thoughts, comments, advice regarding this shot are greatly

appreciated. Expand my horizons with your wise councel.

Composition? Equipment? Film? Take a sabbatical from photography,

Len? What can be\could have been done to make this image stonger?

Best, LM.

Yes, it is painterly, it's a bit abstract, but it's also pleasing the eyes with it's warm autumn colors. About that wind - I find it gives the picture another level of contrast - between the steady rocks and all-the-time changing life. And to those branches in foreground, they don't distract me at all, they symbolize the life's phases - small when young, large and statusque when mature. Although, would have been better if they stood out more against the rock...
