Smokey sunrise in Pinto Basin, 2nd try.

greglyon

Exposure was determined by Histogram. Unrecorded but probably several seconds at f8 or so. Smoke from the October 2003 Forest fires in LA filled the valleys in the high desert on the morning this photo was taken. More work in Photoshop on this version. Compare it to the other one in this folder. This one has a digital ND Grad applied to bring down the sky brightness somewhat, and a different approach to sharpening.

Would you crop out the bottom 1/4 of this image if it was yours? I

debate the merits of either way. Like this it's easier to tell the

location since there are Joshua Trees, but it was a VERY windy

morning so all of the foliage is blurred. Does that detract from

the final image in your mind?

I think this image becomes much better if you make it a little darker, like this. I like the layering effect. The foreground does look a bit blurry, so I think cropping would also be an improvement.

I disagree entirely. I love the original version! I don't feel the slight blur takes away from the photo at all, in fact I think it softens the foreground to blend with all the other layers. And I definitely would not darken it! I LOVE THIS PHOTO!!

I made some changes that have darkened the sky somewhat while keeping the softer feel of the mountains & hills. What do you think?
