LenMarriott

f16, Auto exposure. Hyperfocal focusing technique. Scanned from 4x6 print. (neg tack sharp) Tripod, cable release. Pouring rain. (Do you really care?:)) Slight warming\sharpening in PS. Ratings only are for lazy people. Comments reveal what's really on your mind. How do I take/make a stronger image of this subject? Best, LM.

I got a nice grin from your technical details .................. (-;

I also just 'stole' a copy of your self-portrait. One of my favorite all time classic images in my worthless opinion. The image says so many things to me and all of them are good.

Now, per your request, the image. The 1st thing I would do is switch films. It looks like you use a tripod (excellent) so film speed should not often be an issue. Velvia, Provia or 100 speed print film ................... Composition and dof look good to very good. You've kind of created a channel with the natural elements leading to the bridge - that looks good. I'm not sure if you added the 'fog' around the bridge but leading my eye to an unclear subject doesn't feel right in this instance. It looks like a semi-overcast day so the lighting is good for an even exposure but not so good for a dramatic image. Time of day might offer some unique lighting opprotunities. Having the sun at your back might be a good thing to try too Len. Hope that helps some ..................... (-;

Ok - pouring rain - that explains the fog .......... !!!

Go ahead, stick your neck out! Looking for opinions / observations

on how to improve this type of shot. It's horizontal mate is in

my 'Elora-Fergus' folder. Some questions answered in the 'Technical

Details'. Best, LM.

I may have been hasty in questioning the film. I'm aware they have come a long way in improving the sharpness of higher speed films. And of course I have not done a side by side comparision.

I'm not sure why but the rock in the middle near the base of the bridge distracts me. Both by it's location and contrast with the rest of the scene. I bet if Mervin were here ...... he'd move it for you .................... (-;

Ken, Actually the rock in question was off to the right originally. I moved it to the center to create another diagonal leading to the main center of interest. Sorry for the deception. Please forgive. Best, LM

Len, You have really done this location justice with this shot! I live 5 min away from this bridge and have about 40 frames of it, but none are as nice as this! I have been trying for several years to pull some colour out of that gorge but haven't succeeded this well, not even by cranking up saturation in PS! Great foreground,zig-zag leading line of boulders,(next time give me a call and I can help you move that first one around, a guy shouldn't be moving boulders like that by himself!), nice drama with the faded bridge in the background and I love the greens in the grass! You should be really happy with this shot. Good foreground anchoring, too!

Greg, I was pleased enough with this one to print it 8" x 12". Will bring it along on our next field trip. I sincerely hope that everyone realizes that 'moving the rock' was done 'tongue in cheek'. Wouldn't want the enviro-cops coming down on me. I mean, even the smallest bolder is probably over 1000 lbs. I'd like to redo this shot using medium format, hopefully with a little more water in the gorge. Last fall ('04) the bridge was being refurbished. Hope that didn't change the look too drastically. Best, LM.
