Conratulations TmJ. There are times when one is left speechless, this is one of them. With this photo you have surpassed yourself, Everything is perfect and well composed, the scene, the light, the sharpness, the colors. A masterpiece that enchants and holds the observer, the only one who does not like all this, is the rodent , ciao Giangiorgio

Grazie mille Giangiorgio! This was taken with the Canon 7D Mark II + 1.4x TC + 500mm F4 IS at 1120mm. Amazing Canon !

Unbelievable shot TmJ! This is an inspiring shot - it is really gratifying to get these kind of captures. Well done.

Scott.

Hi TmJ,

this is a stunning shot! The rodent seems to be still alive, but doesn't stand a chance in the powerful grip of the falcon's talon. You make photos with both systems now, or is this an older image? Anyway, into my favorites! Kind regards, Vincent

Thanks Scott Edwardson! It's must have been at least 8+ years since I last get a shot of a Kestrel with a mouse. I would not have wanted to have the 1.4xTC on but I had it on and just keep shooting with it. It turned out well!

Thanks Vincent! I still have theCanon and was going to clean it up (through Canon Professional Service) and sell it but I am not sure now. I've been shooting with the Olympus but I've already know that the last 5% of birdshot (fast bird) are impossible to catch with the Olympus and I dragged my Canon out to shoot some raptor. This Kestrel just happened to show up and the whole thing turned out nicely since I got all this yesterday. I've been shooting with the Canon ever since :-) . The Oly's is good for perching bird using Pro Capture to get taking off shots but for fast flying bird the slow focus does not allow me to catch much. Also, the 100-400mm F5-F6.3 at 800mm reach sometimes is not enough and when I put the 1.4x TC on (to get the same 1120mm as the 500mm F4 + 1.4x TC on the Canon 7D II) , the image quality is not very good because at that point the F-stop becomes F9 and diffraction takes hold and produces soft images. As you can see, the 500mm F4 with the 1.4x TC still produces very sharp image and it focuses decent enough that I can still catch flying Kestrel with no issue.

Giangiorgio, I keep reading your comment and it sure keep making me smile about the way you put everything. I appreciate your friendship through this site over the year very much. Best wishes from SoCal!

This one is for Vincent Oiseau! I like Olympus very much since I am a Canon guy (started out with Canon 46+ years ago) and Olympus is the most serious digital camera that got me back into digital photography( specifically 'bird' photography). BUT, I think this is the reason why Olympus had to sell their camera division. They failed to make a good , fast focusing camera ! They make great camera but what good is a camera that won't focus well ???? It makes me becomes a great 'deleter' who is great at deleting out of focus images. Here I am shooting wildlife with fullframe, cropped frame camera and willing to downsize to 4/3 system but can not do so because the 4/3 gear is not up to the task. I am not even a PRO! So, if one is a Professional who makes a living at photography then ??? . I am testing the Canon R5 + RF 100-500mm + EF to RF adapter next week (loan from Canon Profession Services) and I think I will still keep my Olympus setup (12-200mm & 100-400mm & OMD-EM1 Mark II) for travel but I probably will buy an R5 and EF-RF adapter to shoot with my 500mm F4 lens .

Hi TmJ,

thanks for writing that elaborate comment! I understand where you're coming from; I have more or less the same 'gear background' as you, shot with Canon for years, but even longer with Olympus, can't say one system is better in all respects than the other, but for bird photography Canon is the better (and more expensive) choice. Jpeg quality is often better in Olympus cameras, but who shoots jpegs? I've very recently purchased a Canon EOS R6 and hope to be shooting birds with it soon, when the weather gets a little better (it has been raining a lot lately). I'm curious to hear about your experiences with the Canon EOS R5. Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Vincent! It's interesting to find out your move with equipment seems to reflect mine, LOL! I got a bit carry away there and stand on the soap box more than I should. Probably because it's a love & hate relationship that I have with Mr Oly's . There's no perfect system, that's for sure. For the $1400 I paid for my Oly's setup with the OMD-EM1 Mark II + 100-400mm F5-F6.3, it's actually is the best bang for the bucks. The Canon setup cost me at least 5 times more than that and is showing it's age with weight and not exactly the bests bang for the bucks but it's something I am so used to from using it the last 7,8 years.. For the 500mm lens, it's 12+ years.

LOL, you crack me up Greg & Verena! The mouse, I am quite sure, is already in 'la la' land but it's his fate to meet the talented Mr Kestrel. I was stalking Mrs Kestrel this morning and she's lousy at hunting. Of course, all the mice would have a different opinion about that too. :-)
