Kevelaer is the largest Catholic pilgrimage location within north-western Europe. More than 1 million pilgrims, mostly from Germany and the Netherlands, visit Kevelaer every year to honour the Virgin Mary.

Hi Franz,

appealing image of these candles, so closely tied to the catholic 'rituals' people go through when visiting a place of worship. Long ago I visited Kevelaer with my parents; I remember being impressed by the church. Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent, thank you for your kind comment. My brother walks every year three days as a pilgrim to Kevelaer (not now in Covid-times). It's very interesting to see what happens in those pilgrimage locations. Thousands of Tamils visit Kevelaer every year in August. Kevelaer serves the former civil war refugees as a substitute for the pilgrimage to Madhu in northern Sri Lanka, Best regards, Franz

Kindly, may I ask you the origin of lighting a candles habit in the churches with vows ? what is the foundation of lighting candles in Christianity ?

Thank you in advance.

Saad, already in early Christianity candles were lit to praise God, to thank him and to make personal requests. Kind regards, Franz
