The lighting conditions were very difficult. The altar is lit by two

very yellow spotlights, and the light coming through the windows was

very blue. Also, it is very difficult to get a good angle on the

subject without a tall step ladder. I have reduced the image and

compressed it as much as I dare any more reduction/compression

removes all the detail completely, which would make the photograph

pointless.

Thanks for the comment. However, Winchester Cathedral does not have a spire, as you will see from my other photographs. It fell down years ago, and was never replaced. It means that the building is only imposing close to, and inside. Had it a spire, it would look imposing from a distance, particularly because it can be seen from the M3 just after junction 8, which is 11 miles away.

 

I agree with you that it is a little claustrophobic, but that was because the farthest I could get back from the altar steps was two yards. Any further back would require a scaffold tower.
