Common starling - (Sturnus vulgaris). At this time of the year hundreds of thousands of starlings gather at sunset to sleep in the reeds of the Cagliari lagoon. Flocks as large as huge clouds create spectacular evolutions with rapid gear changes. Many birds of prey including the peregrine falcon try to catch these birds in flight, which defend themselves with sudden changes of direction that confuse the predator. These birds have beautiful plumage with iridescent shades like this exhibited by this specimen. I photographed this common starling with Nikon D500, Sigma supertele 300-800mm, f/5,1, 1/100sec, ISO 180.Thanks for your comments

Fabulous photo, Giangiorgio. The clarity and colors of the bird’s feathers blend beautifully with the broken tree trunk and the soft background. Thanks so much for the interesting explanation!

Take care,

Gary

Yes beautiful colors and iridescent shades! and great sharp lense that renders great blurred out backgrounds.

Hi Giangiorgio,

a 'normal' bird rarely makes an interesting photo; this photo proves this presumption wrong by showing the beauty of the plumage of the very common starling. You've set it out wonderfully against the background. I really like it. Kind regards, Vincent

You're right Vincent, many times we are not interested in the most common birds, neglecting the fact that they too have aspects worthy of being valued. Thank you for your appreciation and great commentary of my photo , glad you liked it, ciao Giangiorgio

You are the photographer of the Giangiorgio birds! I like the neutral background, which highlights the detail of the pumaje. The trunk where the bird is perched is also beautiful. Kind Regards, Rosario.

Giangiorgio, this is the first time I'm seeing a starling "up close and personal." Its feather colors and patterns are mesmerizing. If the bird decided to light closer to the end of the branch, it wouldn't be as secure. Indeed, the branch reminds us that nature occasionally has asymmetry and hazards. - - My best always, michael
