aepelbacher 0 Posted October 28, 2003 Another shot from my road trip to Alaska series. At this point, the car was left behind in Skagway as we toured the Inside Passage via the Alaska Marine Highway State Ferry system. This shot was taken somewhere between Skagway and Haines. As usual, comments or ratings are appreciated. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted October 28, 2003 Nice shot. Looks as though you had a great trip! I find it difficult to convey the scale of big waterfalls. Did you get any closer detail shots? What do you think about cropping a bit from the right side? Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted October 28, 2003 Actually ... this is the closest that I could get with my 75-300mm extended fully. Link to comment
stevemarcus 0 Posted October 30, 2003 This one really has to be viewed in large format to fully appreciate. I notice that you're using fast color negative film (ISO 400-800) for most of your outdoor photos. I would like to encourage you to use 100 speed film whenever it's possible to do so (maybe try some slide film too; Kodak Extra Color is pretty cheap and produces very vivid images). You'll notice far better detail in the dark areas of your photos, a more pleasing contrast, and, especially for photos taken in mid-day sun, less instances of that washed out appearance that is easy to get when using faster speed films. Just a suggestion. Link to comment
Phil_Light 793 Posted February 13, 2008 Lou Ann- I think I was on this same highway where the Yukon-White Pass Railroad travels down to Skagway? I found a smaller waterfall in addition to the one you photographed and happened to get the train actually crossing the trestle with the waterfall underneath. I wondered if this may have been on that same route to White Pass and Haines? Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted February 13, 2008 Hey, Phil! How goes it? Well, I don't know that this is anywhere near the White Pass railroad ... I am pretty sure it was taken along the Alaska Marine Highway route between Skagway and Haines. I don't believe that there are any roads or railway tracks along there ... White Horse is in the other direction. This was a long time ago (you're really making me push the edges of my memory capability), but I'm looking at a map of the area and I think that what you photographed would be quite a bit north of where this waterfall in my image..... Is that what you're asking? Link to comment
Phil_Light 793 Posted March 1, 2008 Yes, the White Pass Railroad does go from Skagway to Haines. So this may very well be along the same route. The railroad is only visible as you are proximate to Skagway and follows the canyon more closely than the highway does as it winds up towards the Yukon and eventually to Haines. Would have loved a time exposure here if it were possible given the constraints of filters, film and such? But none-the-less I am a sucker for water images no matter how they are captured.
