Your comment about the goldfinch being featured in Italian Renaissance paintings triggered me; there are many art historians who believe the carduelis carduelis is a symbol of the Mother and Child knowing on forehand of the crucifixion. Then there is the story of this bird flying above Jesus on his way to Calgary and picking off his thorn crown, turning the front of its head red. Kind regards, Vincent Link to comment
