bernath 2 Posted February 19, 2020 The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is also known as the waterhen or the swamp chicken. It is similar to the common gallinule (Gallinula galeata) that was split from the common moorhen as a separate species by the American Ornithologists' Union in 2011. The word moor means marsh; however, the species is not usually found in moorland. Its older name, common waterhen, is more characteristic of the bird's habitat. Link to comment
Giangiorgio Crisponi 425 Posted February 19, 2020 The pose of the bird and the low angle of view make this beautiful photo more fascinating. I really appreciate your descriptive notes of the subjects presented, ciao Giangiorgio Link to comment

vincentoiseau 83 Posted February 22, 2020 Hi Sandor, what a nice eye-level photo of this juvenile (?) moorhen! I didn't recognize it, as I am probably only used to seeing adult moorhens. The light is wonderful, the stretched-out wing and the foot touching the water are great! Kind regards, Vincent Link to comment
bernath 2 Posted February 22, 2020 Thank you, Vincent, for the kind note. It is indeed a juvenile common moorhen, though its feathering and beak is quite different than those of an adult. Even more interesting that a common moorhen chick likens more to the adult as it has black plumule and red beak. Quite a transformation from chick to juvenile and to adult. Kind regards, Sandor Link to comment
pablowarko 1 Posted March 8, 2020 Wonderful capture of the bird stretching out it's wing on one foot, Sandor. Super colors, light and composition. Best regards, Paul. Link to comment
