Well captured breakfast scene, Jack! I like this interesting frame with a combination of different rhythms ... Bravo! Sincerely, Tatiana

Showing two people sitting a stool apart from each other provides social commentary. While it may be not as obvious in Japan compared with the US, this scene is one of alienation and deliberate separation. It's a convenient method for avoiding communication. Although I don't have any idea about the contents of the jars on the shelves, their identical shapes contrast well with the objects on the other set of shelves. A favorite . . .

Thanks, Michael. You're right on the money with your comments. I felt like I could understand the arc of his life just from a glimpse of his back while eating lunch. There is certainly a sense of isolation which is a phenomenon evident in Japan and probably elsewhere as well, The scene reminds me of Edward Hopper, that master of social alienation.

After so many years of being not only an adept follower but a pupil and friend, I cannot still discern why such a "common, everyday situation" can you convert it into such a striking photograph. It stops me in my tracks....I don't know about other viewers, but it seems it does. You actually manage to make travel in time (you must gather it from my book), i.e. I am there, by your side, discovering what you, through your viewfinder is looking at. A picture, a story....in a single photograph. Best. And thanks. DG
