Here's some background information. Every observant Jewish father presents a son about to have a bar mitzvah 3 gifts: a kipa, a tall it, and a set of tefillin. The kipa is a skullcap which observant Jewish men are required to wear, and not just while in a synagogue. The tallit is a ritual shawl which must be worn during synagogue services. Finally, the tefillin is a pair of wooden boxes, each of which contains the holiest prayer in Judaism. Each box is held by a set of leather straps, one to placed on the middle of one's forehead and the other to be placed on one's left arm . For information on the religious basis of these items, use the following link: https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/kippah-tallit-and-tefilin-the-clothing-of-jewish-prayer .
