michaellinder 16,611 Posted December 13, 2018 Clearly, the woman on her cell phone is listening to the Allman Brothers on Pandora. No, actually she's part of the millions of people depending on emails and text messages for communication. That's sad, but the rest of the image is not. Firstly, I like the differences between the two people: female and male, standing and walking, wearing jeans and wearing a skirt, etc. Second, the large batch of utility lines in the upper left serve as a reminder that the scene is within a metropolis. Finally, the building in the bottom right, as communicating something pertaining to art, stands against the rest of the structures that are starkly realistic. Extraordinary street capture, and a favorite, for sure. Link to comment
Wayne Melia 5,997 Posted December 13, 2018 I'm sure this will inspire unique reactions from every viewer. That's probably why the photographer shares it... just because he has that ability! I see her as neutral and pivotal, but naive as to her importance. He is unknown in his intentions, I see him as curious; but may be maleovent. The motion implied by his pose is another issue of mystery. Love the distinct frames, each with its own story: the darker street behind him; the brighter area bounded by the shadow and the white line; then her space in front of the line to the frame edge and back to the curb; then the building entryway. So many defining details: it wouldn't be the same if her shoe soles weren't 'that' color; echos of red in the sign and her bag; separation of his shadow from the rear shadow; it goes on and on... Thank you, Jack Link to comment
wolfgangarnold 142 Posted December 13, 2018 The way the elements of the composition connect and not connect implies a universe of possibilities. There are stairs and streets, blind windows, a half visible entrance, movement, resting... yet, to me the most important aspect is the subtle use of colour: his blue jeans and her red bad merge in the logo on the right and tie all the elements into a dense composition. The New York street photos of Joel Meyerowitz come to my mind... Link to comment
hstelljes 41 Posted December 13, 2018 Simply, a perfectly composed street with all the elements. I like the light on the subjects and the darker bg, seems to add depth. Really good street Jack..........BR, Holger Link to comment

Jack McRitchie 150 Posted December 15, 2018 Michael, Wayne, Wolfgang, Holger, Miguel - Thanks for taking the time to comment on this picture. I'm not used to such long and detailed comments on my pictures. although it used to be more common in the past. Nowadays in the era of "likes", emojis and tweet, such thoughtful reactions have become a bit of an endangered species. As Wolfgang suspected, I'm a fan of Joel Meyerowitz and have undoubtedly been influenced by the work of Gary Winogrand, Elliott Erwitt and William Eggleston as well. I much admire earlier photographers such as Kertesz, Boubat and Cartier-Bresson among many others but I relate to the work of the four earlier mentioned photographers because they operated in a world that was and is contemporary to my own. Thanks again for your comments; they are very much appreciated. Link to comment
