frigo 4,155 Posted August 12, 2018 Radu..These stone structures were traditionally used as markers by the Inuit and other inhabitants of the Canadian Artic north and these are erected on our lighthouse beach by locals and visitors. They are relatively small and are usually flattened by the fall storms but re-appear the next summer with the arrival of the summer visitors.Salutations amicales-Laurent Link to comment
michaellinder 16,611 Posted August 12, 2018 A fascinating rendering of an Inuksuk, which as varied uses depending on aboriginal tribe that constructed it. I've seen structures like this in SE Alaska, but their appearance were not nearly as impressive as this one. Well done, Laurent. - - My best, michael Link to comment
frigo 4,155 Posted August 13, 2018 Michael...Thank you. These started appearing on the lighthouse beach at the tip of the island a few years ago and have developed into an annual thing.I suspect that returning visitors or maybe somebody local gets the ball rolling and first thing you know, the beach is full of these.Of course, the bigger guys as this one are the first to grow as the largest stones are still available and subsequent ones noticibly smaller. When the high tides and storm season arrive late in the fall, all these are wiped out thankfully sparing their builders the sight of destruction of their masterpieces....some of these are really nice.I usually have my WA lense when I visit here but will return with it for better shots.Salutations-Laurent Link to comment
