Giangiorgio Crisponi 446 Posted July 14, 2018 This photo taken at dawn from the window of my house shows thousands of flamingo chicks gathered in a large group called "crèches" in the lagoon of Cagliari, Nikon D500, Sigma supertelephoto 300-800, f/5,6, 1/1500sec, ISO 100. Giangiorgio Crisponi 446 Posted July 14, 2018 Also this year the flamingos have nested in the lagoons of Cagliari and were born thousands of flamingos. After about two weeks from birth the chicks gather in groups called "microcrèches", and their parents leave them alone. then the microcrèches merge into "crèches" containing thousands of chicks. Chicks that do not stay in their crèches are vulnerable to predators. During the day the mother and father alternate in feeding their young and are always able to find their child among thousands of other very similar individuals. The flamingos feed their chicks with a kind of crop milk, produced in the glands lining the whole of the upper digestive tract. At the time of the meal the chicks stand with their backs to their mother, the neck lifted with the beak open where the mother slides the food. after about two months they are able to filter the food from the lagoons with their beak. michaellinder 16,611 Posted July 14, 2018 Giangiorgio, this image offers a double bonus. (1) Your narratives are informative enough to make think that you must be an ornithologist. (2) The image itself is expertly crafted, beginning with the crop. Secondly, the stark contrast certainly enhances the appearance of the flamingos that already are in the air. Finally, I am quite impressed by what I take to be your use of selective color. - - My best, michael Link to comment
tai 3 Posted July 15, 2018 A stunning view from your window, Giangiorgio! Your explanation is very interesting. Gorgeous composition and PP. I agree with Michael, without a blue color impression is stronger. Delight, Congratulations! Sincerely, Tatiana Link to comment

pablowarko 1 Posted August 26, 2019 It's absolutely amazing to see so many flamingoes in one spot, Giangiorgio. Fantastic light, composition and presentation. Best regards, Paul. Link to comment
Giangiorgio Crisponi 446 Posted August 27, 2019 Paul thanks a lot for your kind comment. Unfortunately this year the flamingos were disturbed during the nesting and only a hundred chickens were born against the 20,000 of the past years, ciao Giangiorgio Link to comment
