frigo 4,155 Posted May 27, 2018 Holger...Thank you;this man stood out in the group which gathered around when we stopped in the small mountain village. His headgear identified his origin, the capped teeth some degree of success but I think his beard/moustache were his bragging rights as Indonesians are mostly beardless. He did not need much coaxing to smile for the shot.Salutations-Laurent Link to comment
DGorinstein 20 Posted May 27, 2018 Cher Laurent: Bon Dimange! Salutations come toujours! Fabulous photo! Can you picture just zooming on him and cropping just this marvelously captured expression? Nonetheless, somethings I NEVER do, is question cropping. As in this case, your cropping is just right to give the whole impact of "the man"!!!Bravo"! Great portrait! Meilleurs salutations. frigo 4,155 Posted May 27, 2018 Daniel...Bien sûr que oui!Of course zooming in on the man's face would highlight his wonderful disposition...sort of expose his soul.If this were a high pixel image, getting closer would offer such an option but my limitation with this and all of my people images is that they are issued from scans of relatively small prints. This one for example is of a landscape oriented print of the man and his wife whom I sacrificed in zooming on the man;as I noted, the man stood out in the crowd given his headgear but mainly because of his beard, then his silver/gold caps when he flashed that smile...and again, there was the colorful muscle shirt worn atop a very traditional sarong;the man was in his best garbs and he clearly didn't mind standing out,nor posing for my camera.I have gone back and sliced some more from the crop but keeping enough to show the extent of his beard....and also enough pixels for the definition and while at it,I converted to B/W to limit the distraction of color from his genuine smile/grin.Hope you see good in this.Meilleures salutations, mon ami-Laurent Link to comment

Jack McRitchie 150 Posted May 28, 2018 Having now viewed your b&w version as well as this one, I have to say I prefer the color. I really do like monochrome portraits usually but in this case I think the color of his shirt and head band as well as the coloring of the man himself, add immeasurably to the character of the picture. frigo 4,155 Posted May 28, 2018 Jack...Thank you for taking the time to view both versions and for your insight.A great subject, one shot and the digital darkroom allows one to turn out totally different images.Salutations-Laurent Link to comment
