The image is very well crafted along such lines, especially the hints of color and the subtle texture formed by the screening. Yet, I see it as a metaphor for a prison cell. The inmates are jammed in like sardines, and here they are competing with each other for a glimpse of what lies immediately outside their cell. There's no hope of rehabilitation, only dehumanization. The distinction between "modern" prisons and medieval dungeons is simply one of degree.
