Named after a laurel tree (orio), this square in the sestiere of Santa Croce in Venice was a stone’s throw away from the hotel we were staying next to the church, Chiesa di San Stae. When we stumbled onto this square I immediately fell in love with the place. Everything about the place was inviting - its unusual shape, its drinking fountains, its shade trees, the ancient temple like feel of its church - the Chiesa di San Giacomo dell'Orio, the children playing. No one seemed to be in a hurry to go anywhere. We returned to this square several times. It is now my most favorite place in Venice. Considering we are talking about Venice, that is saying a lot.
