gregverena 339 Posted August 21, 2017 good grief! Ice storms, fishery fire, now this? Hope you're ok- we didn't think of your area being prone to forest fires. Link to comment
frigo 4,155 Posted August 25, 2017 Greg and Verena,,,,We have had an exceptionally dry summer to the point that wells in our rural communities are running dry;this fire,so some say,was started by sun refraction on some broken glass which ignited the dried up grass...etc...Well,it flared up on the tip of the island and forced the evacuation of the 20+families living there;fortunately ,the firefighters managed to keep the flames away from all of the houses, losing only a few door steps. The area was closed off for all but the families for some time as this is on a peat moss base and fear was that fire was progressing underground.Situation is now back to normal but this ''forest'' will take some time to re-grow as growth on the bog is very slow.....Yes,we have had quite a sequence this year and add to your list a mini-squall which took down the powerline on the causeway to the Islands and closed off access and made us run for our emergency generators for better part of a week; as people say here ''We are built Island Tough''.Salutations-Laurent Link to comment
