Leslie Reid 5,214 Posted January 19, 2017 Great motion, great action, and the colors really add to the sense of excitement here. The fact that a grey is the star here also makes the photo stand out. One point is causing a significant distraction for me, though: oh, how I wish that the striped pole weren't right behind the jockey's neck. Two other distractions are minor: (1) given the amount of room between the hooves and the bottom of the frame, I wish there were a bit more headroom above the jockeys, and (2) it might be useful to try leveling on the basis of the roof lines; the perspective on the far track margin will make the frame look slightly tilted anyway, but having the roofs provide a level line might counteract it enough to make it effectively invisible. Nice shot! Link to comment
Marvin 4 Posted January 20, 2017 Thanks. My major issue is the ambulance in the background. The interesting thing about this shot is that I intended to use 1/2000th sec to freeze the action (while panning) but I forgot to check my settings and I used 1/500th. The result is quite good anyway. The jockeys & horses are sharp and the added bonus is the blurring of the hooves. So, my panning technique was pretty good (on that day anyway). Link to comment
Leslie Reid 5,214 Posted January 20, 2017 Beautiful job on the panning--that really does add a lot to the sense of speed here. And that's an interesting point about the ambulance--I'd seen it, but it didn't really hijack my eye, probably because the action in the center of the frame is so compelling. I can see what you mean, though. You might be able to tone the white down a bit with your editing program--that might be enough to make it behave more background-like. I think the reason the post distracted me more is that it's wearing the same colors as the jockey, so at first glance it looked like part of the jockey even though it's obvious it couldn't be.
