A wonderful all-in-one: a harmonious still-life, a delicate nature-study, and a keenly attentive street-shot. Beautiful in all regards.

Hello dear friend. I have, in innumerable occasions, photographed leaves lying on the pavement, dirt, floor, woods, et. al. trying to catch the essential beauty of fallen leaves....to no avail. All such images I have taken of the beauty of canopy brought to our feet, yes, can be aesthetically pleasing, colorful, even artistic. But this Jack, goes way beyond. No surprise that perhaps, the Japanese minimalism and love for the pure essence of things (Zen) has imbued your photographic work. An unpretentious array you present us with in this simple image, telling us a thousand-page story. Only one minor element trying to escape the water mark....With this comment I am just a the door you so often open up for your viewers (and avid fans, like me), leading us to a fathomless pit of possible interpretations.....And yet, maybe not one at all...just leaves on the pavement....and as such, the utter simplicity and beauty of all but a haphazard capture....the seal of the house.

With utmost respect.

Thanks a lot for your comments on this picture. When I remember to look down at the gutter, I am often surprised. I think because the gutter is treated with so much disdain and is usually completely ignored, it rewards those who take the time to look, After a rain, when the pavement is beginning to dry seems an especially good time for picture taking. The light after the rain is often magical. Daniel, your reviews make me blush.

Jack, I would probably not say what I am thinking if this was by another artist. This image makes me feel terribly sad...a place I am not far from most of the time this past week anyway. But something about this reminds me of a photo I just saw for the first time yesterday. A friend posted online an image of a dead young woman naked and bloody after a botched abortion. She said it was an iconic image back in the sixties so maybe you know the one I am talking about. Maybe it is the shapes. Maybe it is the colors. The image was black and white, but these are the colors I felt when I saw it.
