LOOK AT ME

The Waving Girl Statue by renowned sculptor Felix De Weldon, the sculptor

of the United States Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia (also

known as the Iwo Jima Memorial,) depicts Florence with her loyal collie.

The statue can be found at the eastern end of River Street, overlooking the

Savannah River from the bluff. Thank you for looking. Rates/comments

She got in to the habit of greeting every ship that will cross the Savannah River...

Florence Martus, 1868–1943; her father was an ordnance sergeant at Fort Pulaski on Cockspur Island, where she was born, aka "the Waving Girl", took it upon herself to be the unofficial greeter of all ships that entered and left the Port of Savannah, Georgia, between 1887 and 1931.
