ISO 2500 handheld.

St. James the Apostle Anglican Church in Montreal was around for 152 years and closed its doors in 2015 due to financial difficulties. It reopened again this year under the name of St. Jax, with flair and under different leadership but still Anglican.

This is a Christmas Carol service.  Each adult had a lit candle.

You seem to have handles the extremely difficult lighting situation admirably!  I love this view with the glow of the candles evident between the people. Very Christmassy atmospheric shot!  Very well done!

Alf, Thanks. This is a slow period for photography and even for Photo.net because of so many things going on in December. I carry my camera with me and if an opportunity pops up, I try and take advantage. Since I was under no obligation to take this image, it allows me to experiment and learn at the same time. The lens was almost wide open - do you focus on the distance or up close on the people? I adjusted focus to the furthest point and with 24 mm setting, I got some reasonable DOF.

All the best,

Tony you've got some great atmosphere here. The candles lighting the people creates a warm light where there wouldn't be one. Really well done.

Patsy - Thanks.

Mike - Thanks. The cell phone had a picture of a candle  - a much safer option (*_*). Maybe I could develop a Christmas light App.

Holger - Thanks. As soon as the candles came out, I did two things - checked to see where the fire exits were and then walked to the back of the church to make this photo.

Tina - Thanks - no photos of your handsome grandson?

Eystein - Thanks

David - Music to my eyes also.

Such an interesting tone- like a Norman Rockwell painting- also, teleprompters have now replaced hymnals?? what a brave new world:)

Good documentary image Tony

This is a good news story, here in the states we have many church consolidations, the ones that close are reopened as bars. When they were churches no one came, now as a bar they pack them in.

Great low light shot, nice and crisp and abundant color

The teleprompters are part of the cost cutting - printing the hymnals every Sunday is at a cost of thousands per year, Insurance for a building like this with no claims is about 25,000$, heating is about 50,000$ and so on and so on.  The older people are on pension and dying out so they have to try something new especially as there is a University 5 minutes away. There is another church like this 20 minutes away and that will close and probably be sold to developers early in 2017.

I Just noticed your question regarding  where to focus. I know when I've used a wide angle lens in the past I've tended to focus relatively close, maybe 2 meters away, and with the  aperture at something like F/5.6 this has allowed a superb DOF. But in this case the far focus seems to have worked for you, so maybe try two shots for comparison purposes.

Best Regards

Thanks for the tip which I will try. This focus thing is a weak area for me. I get around it with a 2 image focus stack but not in this case. December is a socially crazy month but I should have some time available to me in January to experiment - I hope.
