To a hongkong visitor one of the remarkable aspects of the city are

ensembles of, say, five to ten almost identical high rise buildings of

typically 40 stories, densely grouped together Such estates are

located in many different parts of the city. Most of them are public

housing projects of subsidised apartments for a major part, about 30%,

of the population of hongkong. Most of my countrymen would abhor

living in such places considering them as probably degraded with high

rates of joblessness and crime. During my last visit to hongkong I

spent some time to find out about the actual living conditions in

these estates My impression is that conditions are in general very

good, with excellent infrastructure concerning public transportation,

playgrounds, schools, sportsfields, shopping malls. The social climate

is very friendly, people know and assist each other. Population is

mixed by origin, many trom mainly china, and age, many young families

with kids as well as elderly people.. The crime rate is very low and

cleanliness exemplary. The following pictures should illustrate my
