Just the elephant's look (along with his "sad" color) behind those huge bars would be enough to make a good photo. The optically noisy cheerful crowd enhances the meaning, and kind of, makes us all to feel responsible for that.

Ps. I was wondering what these areas in front of the hat and on the cheek are.

My feeling as well. As far as the area you are referring to, it's kind of a very poor area adjustment in PS and a case of not paying as much attention as I should to feathering. Pretty inexcusable.

Scourge yourself you sinful photographer, repend, and write a comment with the phrase "next time i will read the f@&^ing PS manual" one thousand times (no copy - paste allowed!) and then the secret fraternity of the unerring photographers of the PM MAYBE will forgive you.
