I do not know what this can be and means in this culture but at first view in my mind looks like an eye that surveys the place, old symbols, old meanings are part of our evolution and even today with whole technology we like to think and know about this.Interesting photo.

Some people spend hours an hours writing software to create frames around (usually) bad photos and you show up with this?

You have no respect for their job Jack, shame on you.

Ps. Into my favorites.

At last a Japanese Mignon, or as second possibility the all seeing eye? I collected this one Jack, done a great job.

Best regards

Ditto what Herman said.  Initially looking at the thumbnail I felt it had to do with an eye, and - lo and behold - Herman pegged it.

So now I have to come up with an alternative take.  The image is a representation of a Japanese metaphysician's eye chart.  Closing one eye at a time, a client has to look first at each of the corners; thereafter, at the eye itself; finally at the center of the twirled object toward the bottom.  Apparently the Japanese characters on the right constitute a set of instructions for the practitioner.

As if my head isn't jumbled enough, Jack, you had to come up with this!

I must amend my prior comment, in which I stated "T.S. Elliott's got nothing on you," to "Kandinsky's got nothing on you, Jack."

What a best way to stay in touch with you, one of the few truly "originals" and well seasoned photographers of PN. It's like having a craving to swim and you find yourself in a nice beach but the water being too cold. It is here, in your portfolio where it is truly worthwhile to plunge in....and you know, exactly like the metaphor: once taken the dive, the feeling is exhilarating! I feel refreshed, challenged, pleased, rewarded, and attending to the subject above, overwhelmed by this marvel of an image. With all humbleness, I dare to mumble my opinion on not only this photograph, but on the immense statement it makes regarding your trajectory, personality and knowledge of what works in photography. Your unique style is what stops viewers in their tracks....at least "this" viewer. It is a pricey catch in and by itself, but the kanji is what makes it so mystifying. Thank you. And thanks again! If, after searching for the meaning I am correct, then "Dai" (huge, big) is what this image is. One of the most complex works I have seen in a loooong time! Aside from the modernistic composition, the photograph itself is one of your accustomed Rorschach tests... And if I may may, my personal interpretation is "Big Eye". If so, then it is my most sincere compliment, because that is precisely what you have for Photography. A gift to us all! An I am so thankful for it. A masterpiece. With appreciation and sincere recognition. Yours truly.

Jack,  The colours, the layers, the framing, the eye are all so expressively set up that Nina Simone seems glad to voice the message of your beautiful, intricate art work!

Many thanks for taking the time to put down your thoughts on this picture. It's strange how one picture will connect with a wide range of people and another will just sit there, lonely and unacknowledged. I have no idea why this picture has had 600+ views while my usual picture gathers 100 or so. I can't believe it is THAT interesting. Does anyone out there have an explanation? Was it featured in some popular but hidden gallery that I'm somehow not aware of? By the way, nice of you to connect with the Nina Simone reference, Bachir. I saw her once in San Francisco and I'll tell you it was unforgettable though I never felt so conspicuously white (that was back in the early 70's during her Mother Africa phase).
