The Peterborough Lift Lock is located on the Otonabee River section

of the Trent Canal in the City of Peterborough, Ontario where I live .

Lock 21 is a large concrete structure along the Trent-Severn

Waterway designed to lift boats 19.8 metres(65 ft.). The lock

operates on a balance system. Water is let into the upper chamber, a

connecting valve is opened and the heavier chamber automatically

descends, forcing up the lower chamber to start a new cycle. The lift

lock functions as part of the Trent–Severn Waterway National

Historic Site of Canada, managed by Parks Canada. Official

recognition refers to the lift lock, including the immediate upper and

lower canal cuts, the embankments and underground works that are

associated with the function of the lock. My first visit here was an

excursion that was for our Grade 8 Class Party. While that alone

should let you know just how old this Lock is :) it was actually

opened on July 9, 1904. I will be posting a few images - this is but a

small section of the lock - this POV of course was my choice for

display purposes. (more images of the Lock are in Jim Downs

Gallery as well as Garry Barker's Gallery.

Gail, this is quite different from the type of image you normally post. Usually I can pick your photos out of the thumbnails at a glance but not so with this one. You've turned the lock askew but it was the very acuteness of the angle which drew my attention. When most everything has been seen and categorized, it's the novelty of the sharply original vision which stands out for me..

thanks for dropping by.  I appreciate it as you are one of the few that really know much or have visited the Lift Locks in Peterborough. Glad you liked the POV
