Lannie and Holger have this one pegged, Jack.  One observation I'm going to add is the additional interest the inverted question marks (lamp poles) provide.

This new craze may seem alien to the children of the fifties and sixties, but at least players have to leave the house and move around.

That's a little like saying that at least zombies are walking around rather than just lying in some moldy grave. I guess it's a craze like the hula hoop in the '50's. but then I thought karaoke was "just a passing thing" 25 years ago. I know, I know, spoken like an old curmudgeon.
