Why do I have to select a category to post my picture in the critique

forum. Categories should be a convenience not a requirement.

Jack,

I feel you are right with your statement. Very often I feel short in choice here om Pn.

But why do I see this image on this place? After som pondering I think I have an answer. You make an image, print it and hang it out in the public place. Hence you make a new image of the public framed image. And subsequently you offer us your new image.

Thats what I call refreshing thinking. Be assured I like this original image very much. Best regards,

Herman

Herman has an excellent point; to put it a bit differently, this is an example of what could be called metaphotography.  Also, I find it most interesting that this image trades strongly on the fact that, despite the somewhat bright surroundings, the photograph within the frame seems to have classic film noir characteristics.

Very off beat shot Jack. I like offbeat. Well done. Categorizing photographs is somewhat annoying to me, especially the "Fine Art" category. Photography is art regardless of whether it's from the street or from the mountains of Patagonia (or it could just be crap, but you know what I mean). Try posting and "Environmental Portrait" in the Portrait gallery and see the lack of interest you get. I must say, I don't embrace the categories on PN or most other places. However, I do have them on my own website. But I created and described them for my own work. One size does not fit all. Here is a link to my gallery page if you are interested.  http://www.wideawakephoto.com/galleries One last thought on categorizing that is somewhat related. Often when entering a juried exhibit you are asked if you are a pro, semi pro or amateur photographer. I believe your work should stand on its own and have nothing to do with your resume, your work, what school you went to or where you have exhibited before. I started answering all the questions on entries to juried exhibits with "my work stands on its own". Needless to say, I have had little luck with my work being accepted of late. :-) I agree that categorizing a photograph on PN should be optional.

Jack, having to choose a category can be a challenge for a lot of photo's that cannot easily be pigeon holed into a convenient section.

But when it comes to your images I think there should be a category called "Jack McRitchie". I love viewing your postings they are unique and just you.

I don't necessarily understand them but they are always (nearly always) worth a look and provoke an emotion. What more can you want from a photograph.

That doesn't really offer a critique of this post, I think I need more time.

A found film noir oddity...mounted on a panel jutting out from a wall somewhere?  A story within a story.

Well, perhaps they should just have a more generic category - seeing as they seem to want to have them - it does help us if there are certain areas of imagery we or others are not interested in.  My mind is searching for something that would do this and many other images justice - one has not jumped out at me - but this image certainly grabbed my attention, as did the Title. I like your intimate POV and corresponding crop - the depth, varied lines and angles but I am drawn back to her face - I wonder 'who's obsession she is '?

First great photo Jack, second I totally agree with your statement regarding categorization, it should be optional because frequently as I have complained, "there's no good category for this image".......whatever. New category.....no category.
