Good use of depth of field.  Good gray tones.  Strong expression.  The entire image just works with strong impact.

His expression is OK for a candid, but is far from perfect and would not make a good proper portrait IMHO. I like the textures on his face and the blurred background. B/W works very well also. I don't like the loss of light towards the top of his head, though, and can't understand how this happened (it looks annoying to me).
