Landrum Kelly 64 Posted June 14, 2016 In a restaurant parking lot on South Main St. (Which S. Main St.? Does it really matter?)--Lannie Link to comment
Supriyo 6,008 Posted June 14, 2016 Lannie,This is a remarkable, or should I say landmark image (in reference to the signboard), because despite all the other background elements, and the fact that the black cat covers such a small area of the frame, eyes immediately get fixated on the little animal. Excellent timing and great idea of including the ambient surrounding. The small size of the cat helps to hold attention on the image, because it takes a while to figure out what's going on. The black silhouette of the cat, the pale light of the setting sun and deserted parking lot, perfect venue for a mystery story unfolding. Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted June 14, 2016 Thanks, Supriyo. It was simply a lucky shot, nothing more. I saw a mostly black cat moving into the frame just as I was about to shoot. I decided to shoot anyway. That was about it where the cat was involved in my decision whether and how to shoot. I'm glad that the cat put on such a display, but I saw none of that until I pulled the shot up for processing on the computer much later. --Lannie Link to comment
M_Lipakis 3 Posted June 14, 2016 To my eyes Landrum this is an optical (mostly dark) chaos with nothing remotly interesting in it that the kitty can't "save". Maybe if the image is big enough you can crop it around the cat but i i still don't think you can make something good out of it.Sorry Lannie but that's exactly how i feel about this image. I maybe be wrong or photographicaly uneducated but that's my true opinion. Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted June 14, 2016 You are right Michail. I saw it only as a documentary shot of an area that will change as the new road goes through near the restaurant parking lot. The cat just happened to come into the picture. It is of no consequence as a photograph except to those of us who know the neighborhood. For the record, the houses at the top were once on S. Main St.--but which is now Old S. Main St. The area has been in decay for some decades. For those who know the South, it is a familiar scene. --Lannie Link to comment
M_Lipakis 3 Posted June 14, 2016 If decay was your theme i owe you an apology. I could say more to justify me ...but the cat ate my tongue.Keep on shooting.Michalis Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted June 14, 2016 It was just a personal documentary for my eyes only, Michail. I never intended to post it, and I concur with your judgment of it. No offense taken; no apology required. The cat converted it into a "fun catch,' nothing more. It is a reminder of the vagaries of chance where photography is concerned. --Lannie Link to comment
Supriyo 6,008 Posted June 14, 2016 Lannie,Even if it was a lucky shot, you spotted it among other images and decided to retain it and post it. So if viewers like it (or not), it is completely your credit. Anyway, it is a fun shot, and in no way uninteresting. You can even caption it "When the little black cat jumped into my frame" or "Photobombed by a little kitty cat" :-) Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted June 14, 2016 Thank you, Supriyo. I am certainly not displeased with it, in spite of its defects and limitations. --Lannie Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted June 15, 2016 I'm with Supriyo here. Look at the pictures that the staff chooses as their "daily samplings of members work" gallery. They are mostly beautiful, perfectly composed pictures, safe, with little that really delights or surprises. There are no mistakes there at all. I can appreciate them as well produced works of art but there is almost no feeling of serendipity at all and to tell the truth, they largely bore me Link to comment
