This feels almost man made like some primitive trap made to snare game. It's hard to understand how this arrangement of branches could occur naturally - though probably, somehow, that's the case. More the mystery.

Thanks for the comments guys.  Jack, it really is just a fallen tree, slowing decomposing.  I've ridden by it on a daily basis.  I think this Spring the wood is darkening and the fresh green foliage is creating the strong contrast between the two, which I just noticed for the first time that evening.
