Black-necked Stilt Tango - Olympus EM1 + Lumix/Leica 100-400mm @400mm - 1/1250, F6.3 & ISO 640 - Handheld shot! -No clearance to shoot, I have to shoot through the reeds ...if you can see some fuzzy areas. ... I miss the main part of the tango and only got the ... last intermission here.

Hello Tm J. Pity your left your Canon 7D Mk II at home.........

Nice capture, nice moment, but not very sharp and detailed. (Sorry, but I guess the critique forum serves both ways...) Best regards, Wobby.

Thanks Chris! I like the lighting and pose.

Thanks Wobby! Happy to hear your honest opinion, I used to be on a critique site and this site is very tame compare to that site (it's no longer in business  ought to tell you).  It's true that the image has some fuzzy area because I was shooting through the reeds opening (very small) with this image. Personally, I am still wonder how this 4/3 images compares to the APS-C setup I had before. So far, I am happy with reservation but there are a few factors that involve and it's hard to decipher the actual issue. First, we are dealing with 2 different cameras and manufacturers. Second, the Olympus 4/3 sensor is 30% smaller but if I shoot closer with little or no crop that should not make a different, I think.  Third, we are comparing 2 different setup that use 2 different lenses - one is the Lumix/Leica 100-400mm and the other is a fixed focal (well known for sharpness) Canon 500mm F4 and I think the culprit might be because of this differences.  Fourth, shooting conditon varies  as in this case I was shooting through the reeds instead of a clear shot (I always try to put some note at the bottom of the detail section, btw).  Again, I am glad to hear your honest/ constructive comment since it only can make me a better shooter!  :-)

Thank you for your extended reply and explanation. As said before I favour the canon 300 f2.8 mk II + extenders. I think this is the sharpest canon - even dxo labs confirm this. It is not really light, but compared to the 500 it is a lot easier to handle. Also the Canon 100-400 mk II is a very sharp lens, even at 400!! No good to use extenders on this one however, as IQ gets affected visibly. Best of luck with your choices. Regards, Wobby.

Thanks Wobby! I always know it's a safer bet to go Canon since APS-C is about just right and the 4/3 is a bit on the small size. The calculated area for 4/3 is only 70% of the APS-C but I think the actual area is less because 4/3 is not what we normally crop to and most of the time we crop to a horizontal 3/2 ration which means the actual image ended up less than 70%, I think. I actually dragged the Canon 7D Mark II + 1.4x TC + 500mm F4 out + tripod since the birds has been mating so far way.

For this image though, I got it because of the nimble small setup since there a guy with a 500mm + tripod who could not crawl down to where I am at (much closer) so it would have been a no shot for a large setup. I think you setup of 300mm F2.8 has a lot of merit since with a 1.4x TC it has decent reach and the quality is probably better than the 500mm F4 even.

Lovely shot. I wonder if there is not an adaptor that would allow you to use your canon 500mm on the Olympus, or the GX8 so you could really compare to the canon. Just a thought. G

Thanks Greg & Verena! LOL, that's what I bought first of all Greg. It's a Kipon EF-MFT (EF mount to Micro four thirds) and it's works ok with single focus but not continuous focus. I was shooting the GX8 + 500mm F4 EF before I got the Lumix/Leica 100-400mm . Image from the 500mm F4 is a notch above the Lumix\Leica 100-400mm for sure. Partly because it's a fixed focal lens and on top of that it's a very sharp lens.  Today, I put the GX8 + Kipon adapter + 1.4x TC III + 500mm F4 (equivalent of 1400mm ) and I can tell right away the focus is slower and the image is /won't be comparable to the Canon 7D Mark II + 2x TC III + 500mm F4.  Partly, it's because the later is a native system through out (camera & lens) and partly I think the DSLR focus is better (especially the Canon 7D Mark II). I think the 4/3 combo I bought is very ultility (compact) and got it's place but now I am not so sure I can live with just a small system.  Last time, I went to Angel Stadium (in Anaheim, CA) they told me to put my Canon 7D Mark II + 100-400mm in the car since they don't allow big lens in the stadium (in case the image compete with the Pro down the field, I think). But, I think they will let me bring this GX8/EM1 + Lumix\Leica 100-400mm in since it's very small (smaller than a 5D II + 200mm F2.8).
