Panasonic GX8 + Lumix\Leica 100-400mm @195mm (390mm in 35 format) - 1/2500, F5 & ISO 640 - Handheld shot! ... Looking at the camera LCD screen I had thought I am ready to dump DSLR for birdshooting but at expanded view at home it's not bad but not on the same level as my Canon 7D Mark II + 500mm F4 yet. Of course, I don't expect 10/10 match I was looking for 8/10 or 9/10 but in expanded view it's not that good.

Thanks for viewing/comments! I was dying to test the Panasonic GX8 + Lumix/Leica

100-400mm to shoot this bird and there it is .. took me almost 6 hours to get it. She

came by after 3 hours but I could not get it and on the 5th hour she came again but I've

learn from the first dive and zoom in to focus, zoom out to shoot and got her.

Of course, this is quite the capture- and your endurance is commendable. I have to say, though, that your canon + the 500mm prime did a better job at capturing details and clarity. G

Thanks David! I was wondering the same thing also (..unless she got crossed-eye, LOL) since she buzzed me (flew right over my head) after this.

Thanks Greg & Verena! Yup, I was so pleasantly supprised that I could get this shot with the GX8 + Lumix/Leica 100-400mm but went home open up the file 100% I can see that's it's not optimal in comparison to my Canon 7D Mark II + 500mm f4. I am not sure if it's this setup that's at fault since the shot before this one seems better (but I clipped the upper wing on that image). Since I've been having problem with the GX8 (sleeping focus) focus at closed distance (it won't focus on the subject but on the background) I bought a used Olympus OMD -EM1 yesterday and it seems to focus at close distance better than the GX8 when I used it this afternoon.  I am very much ready to dump  my DSLR to keep the Sony for landscape and probably Olympus for birdshooting but I want to keep testing for a while first.

But, don't forget the Canon 7D Mark II + 500mm F4 package is almost 3 times more expensive than the Panasonic GX8 + Lumix/Leica 100-400mm  or the Olympus OMD-EM1 + M.zuiko 300mm F4 PRO

Well, I think the lens passed the test, Tm J  because results are good.  Also, I like all the detail we see here and diagonal composition.

I think the effort was worth it!

Kind Regards,

Rosario.

Muchas Gracias Rosario! It's not a bad lens and (not sure at this point) I think it might be very good with the Olympus OMD -EM1 than the GX8 . But, I think the lens I have been waiting for (due to high demand.. Olypus said so) is the m.zuiko 300mm PRO that probably sharper since it's a fixed focal lens (on top of that Olympus claim that it's the sharpest lens they ever made).  Too many toys .. to little time .. :-)

Tm J, I agree that canon 500 f4 is (too) heavy to work without tripod. But I do work many times with 7D II + Canon 300 f2.8 Mk II + extender 1,4 or 2.0 (the result in sharpness is hardly any different and/or notable). This set-up is much lighter and easier to shoot hand-held. The mirror-less cameras are almost always slow in shooting after getting focus.....  Regards, Wobby.

Thanks Wobby for your input! May be I am going too light :-) - I was thinking if I am not happy with all this then I will go with a 7D II + 400mm DO + 1.4x TC .. rumours has it that Canon may make a 600mm D0 in the future. Currently some friend also recommand Nikon D500 + Nikon 200-500mm lens at 6.5 lbs (7D II + old 500mm F4 IS = 10.5+ lbs).
